Kite Gear

A kitesurfing setup looks complicated at first: a kite, a bar with four or five lines, a board, a harness and a few safety items. Each piece has one clear job. Here is what they do — and when you actually need your own.

The Setup

ItemWhat it does
KiteCreates the pull; size depends on your weight and the wind
Bar and linesSteer and control power; includes the safety systems
BoardTwin-tip for learning and freeride; surfboard or foil later
HarnessConnects you to the bar so your body, not your arms, takes the pull
Helmet and impact vestProtection and buoyancy
LeashConnects you to the kite with a safety release

Safety Systems on the Bar

  • Letting go of the bar depowers the kite.
  • The quick release on the chicken loop disconnects you from the harness.
  • The leash release separates you from the kite completely.

What Lessons Include

Everything. In our kitesurfing courses the kite, bar, board, harness, helmet and impact vest are all included, and the instructor chooses sizes for your weight and the day. You do not need to buy anything to learn.

Expert Tip

Buy in this order once you ride independently: harness (it must fit you), then a board, then a kite in the size you use most. Try sizes in rental first.
