Kite Gear

The harness is what makes kitesurfing possible for long sessions: it transfers the pull of the kite to your body, so your arms only steer. The main choice is between a seat harness and a waist harness.

How a Harness Should Fit

  • Snug without restricting breathing — it should not move when you pull on the hook.
  • The spreader bar sits low enough that it does not dig into your ribs.
  • Try it on with what you ride in (rash guard or wetsuit).
  • A waist harness should not slide up under your arms when you lean back.

Spreader Bars and Hooks

The spreader bar holds the hook that connects to the chicken loop on your bar. Fixed hooks are the most common; some riders use sliders for freestyle. Always check that your chicken loop and safety release work with your hook.

Expert Tip

If your lower back aches after sessions, the harness may be too high or too loose. Before buying a new one, try adjusting its position and tension.

In Lessons and Rental on Koh Samui

Harnesses are included in all kitesurfing lessons — the instructor fits you on the first day. Independent riders can rent a harness from 250 THB per hour, or bring their own.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a beginner use a seat or waist harness?

Either works. Some beginners prefer a seat harness because it cannot ride up; many switch to a waist harness as they progress.

How tight should a kite harness be?

Snug enough not to move when you pull on the hook, but without restricting your breathing.

Is a harness included in kite lessons?

Yes. All equipment, including the harness, is included in Kite Club lessons on Koh Samui.

Can I rent just a harness?

Yes, from 250 THB per hour for riders renting or bringing the rest of their gear.
