Both use a hand-held sail, both are ridden standing up and both work in the same wind. But the feel is very different: windsurfing is connected to the water, wing foiling flies above it. Here is how to choose.

Side by Side
| Windsurfing | Wing Foil | |
|---|---|---|
| The sail | Rig fixed to the board by a joint | Hand-held wing, free of the board |

| Hardest part | Upwind sailing and gybes | Foil balance and take-off |
| Light wind | Big sail and board work well | Big wing and efficient foil needed |
| Gear to carry | Larger: board, mast, boom, sail | Compact: wing, board, foil |

Choose Windsurfing If…
- You want quick results on day one — sailing in a straight line comes fast.
- You like a direct, mechanical connection between sail, board and water.
- You enjoy the idea of planing fast on the surface with the harness.
Choose Wing Foil If…
- You want the flying sensation of a hydrofoil.
- You prefer compact gear you can travel with.
- You are patient with a learning curve that starts slower but becomes very free.
Windsurfers learn to wing fast — they already read the wind and trim a sail. Many of our wing students have windsurfed before; the new part for them is only the foil.
Trying Both on Koh Samui
Both sports are taught at Nahai Beach from December to April and at Nathon Beach from May to October. See windsurfing lessons and wing foil lessons — all equipment is included.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is wing foiling easier than windsurfing?
Windsurfing gives quicker first results; wing foiling takes a few more sessions to fly but feels very free once it clicks.
Can windsurfers learn wing foiling quickly?
Yes. Wind reading and sail trim transfer directly; the new skill is foil balance.
Which needs less wind?
Both can work in light wind with big gear. For learning, steady 12–18 knots suits both.
How much do lessons cost on Koh Samui?
Both intros are 5,000 THB for 2 hours and both beginner courses 14,000 THB for 6 hours, with all equipment included.
