Wing Foil

"How long until I fly?" is the first question almost every new wing foiler asks. The honest answer depends on wind, water, equipment and your background — but the stages are predictable. Here is what a realistic progression looks like in hours on the water.

The Stages in Hours

StageTypical water timeWhat you can do
Wing handling and taxiing1–3 hoursSteer the wing, stand on a big board, ride across the wind
First flights3–8 hoursPump onto the foil, short flights, controlled touchdowns
Longer flights, first upwind8–15 hoursStay on the foil, hold your ground against the wind
Turns on the foil15+ hoursTacks and jibes without touching down, toeside riding

These are ranges, not promises. Some riders fly in their first lesson; others need several sessions. Both are normal.

What Makes Progress Faster

  • A big board and front foil — more volume and lift means more riding and less swimming in the early stages.
  • Steady wind and flat water — chop and gusts slow down every stage.
  • Short, frequent sessions — two hours on three days beats six hours on one.
  • Board-sport background — kiters, surfers and windsurfers usually move faster through balance and wind awareness.
  • Feedback — someone on the beach sees what you cannot feel.
Expert Tip

Do not chase a smaller board too early. The fastest learners are usually the ones who stay on a stable setup until take-offs are routine.

How Our Courses Map to the Timeline

  • Intro lesson — 2 hours, 5,000 THB: wing handling, taxiing, safety.
  • Beginner course — 6 hours (3 × 2 h), 14,000 THB: taxiing to first flights.
  • Advanced course — 10 hours (5 × 2 h), 20,000 THB: upwind riding, tacks, jibes and toeside.

All equipment is included in our IWO wing foil lessons, and the instructor changes board and foil size as you progress.

Planning Around the Wind on Koh Samui

From December to April we ride at Nahai Beach: flat, shallow water and 12–20 knots — the wind is NE in December, turns SE during January and blows from the SE until the end of April, most consistent January–March. From May to October we teach at Nathon Beach, where the SW monsoon is lighter and more variable, so plan extra days if you are learning mid-year.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours to learn wing foiling?

Most riders make first flights within 3–8 hours on the water and start riding upwind somewhere around 8–15 hours.

Can I learn to wing foil in a week?

In a week with steady wind, most people get to first flights. Riding upwind and turning usually take longer.

Is wing foiling faster to learn if I kitesurf?

Usually yes for wing handling and wind awareness, but the foiling part is a new skill for most kiters.

Which course should I book?

Start with the 2-hour intro or go straight to the 6-hour beginner course if you already know you want to learn.
