Wing Foil

Thailand has two wind seasons driven by the monsoons, warm water all year and a relaxed pace that suits learning. Koh Samui adds something useful for a new sport like wing foiling: a school that moves between two coasts to follow the wind.

Two Monsoons, Two Coasts

The Gulf of Thailand gets wind from the north-east monsoon in the dry season and from the south-west monsoon in the middle of the year. On Koh Samui we use both: Nahai Beach on the south coast from December to April, and Nathon Beach on the west coast from May to October.

MonthsSpotWind
DecemberNahai BeachNE, season opens
JanuaryNahai BeachTurning from NE to SE, 12–20 kts
February – AprilNahai BeachSE, 12–20 kts, most consistent until March
May – OctoberNathon BeachSW monsoon, 10–18 kts, more variable
October – November—Transition, light and variable

Why Flat Water Matters

The early stages of wing foiling — taxiing and the first take-offs — are far easier on flat water. At Nahai the water is shallow and flat along a 2 km beach, so the board stays level and your first flights last longer.

Local Insight

Samui has its own airport (USM), so a wing trip can start on the day you land. Pack light — everything is included in lessons, and the water is warm enough to ride without a wetsuit.

Planning a Wing Trip

  • For the most consistent wind, book January–March at Nahai.
  • Allow at least a week for the beginner course plus a couple of spare days.
  • Mid-year trips work too at Nathon — bring flexibility and expect bigger wings on lighter days.
  • On flat days, try the e-foil: it teaches foil balance without wind.
