Monthly Guide

January on Koh Samui is the start of the most consistent part of the kite season. During January the wind at Nahai Beach on the south coast turns from the north-east to the south-east, and January to March is typically the steadiest, strongest period of the year — usually 12–20 knots. Early January can still bring a few showers as the rainy season fades.

Who Should Come in January

January suits almost everyone: beginners who want a steady learning wind, returning riders who want regular sessions, and visitors who want to combine kiting with the rest of Koh Samui — Lamai village, Chaweng, Fisherman's Village in Bophut or a day trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park.

As with any wind destination, there will be lighter days. On those days the school runs e-foil, kayak and SUP sessions, or uses the time for theory and kite control on the beach. Building one or two buffer days into your trip is always a good idea.

Early, Mid, and Late January

  • Early January (1–10) — The last showers of the rainy season can still pass through. Wind is usually establishing well, with some lighter days.
  • Mid January (11–20) — the wind is swinging from NE to SE. Typically 12–20 knots at Nahai; sessions become more predictable.
  • Late January (21–31) — Usually drier and steadier, leading into February and March, the core of the Nahai season.
Expert Tip

If you can choose, a trip from mid-January into February gives you the best chance of steady SE wind at Nahai. If you are coming for the New Year period, book lessons early and allow a few buffer days.

January Advantages

January is a popular month on Koh Samui, especially around New Year, so book accommodation near Nahai or in Lamai early. The Ocean Resort is right next to the spot, and Lamai, 10–15 minutes away, has options for every budget.

Local Insight

January is one of our favourite months for new students: the wind is usually steady, the water is warm (27–30 °C) and there is enough time left in the season to continue into February and March if you catch the bug.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is January worth coming for kitesurfing?+

Yes. January is part of the most consistent period at Nahai Beach (January–March), with typical wind of 12–20 knots that turns from NE to SE during the month. There will still be some lighter days, so plan a trip of 10 days or more if you want to complete a full course.

What kite size for January?+

It depends on the day. A 70 kg rider typically uses a 9–12m kite in the 12–20 knot range common at Nahai in January, and a larger kite on lighter days. Kite Club carries the full size range — your instructor selects appropriately for each day's wind.

How does New Year's affect the school?+

Kite Club is open year-round including over New Year's. January 1 may have reduced sessions depending on weather. Contact us in advance to confirm scheduling around the holiday period.

Is January a busy month?+

It is one of the busier months, especially around New Year. The school keeps groups small, so lesson quality does not change — but book lessons and accommodation early if you are travelling over the holidays.
