Body Drag
Guide

Home / Blog / Body Drag Guide
Technique

Before you stand on a board, you learn to let the kite pull you through the water. Body dragging looks simple, but it teaches the two things you need for everything that follows: controlling power and getting back to your board.

Why Body Drag First

  • You feel how kite position creates pull — without a board to worry about.
  • You practise flying the kite with one hand, which you need to carry the board.
  • You learn to get back to your board after a fall, which is essential for independent riding.

Downwind Body Drag

Lie on your front, kite at 12 o'clock, and steer it gently left and right in a figure of eight. The kite pulls you downwind. Keep the movements smooth and small; big dives mean big pulls.

Upwind Body Drag

  • Park the kite on one side at about 45°, with one hand on the bar.
  • Turn your body sideways and use your free arm and shoulder like a keel.
  • The kite pulls you across and slightly upwind — the same principle as edging a board.

Recovering Your Board

Lost the board after a fall? Body drag upwind towards it in short legs on each side, keeping it in view. Grab it by the handle, then get into position for the water start. This one skill is what lets you ride without someone collecting your board.

Expert Tip

Keep your eyes on the board, not the kite, during recovery. Check the kite with a quick glance, then look back at the board.

In Our Lessons

Body dragging is part of the Discovery lesson and the Full Beginner course at Kite Club Koh Samui. At Nahai Beach the water is shallow and flat, so you can stand up between drills and reset quickly. See the kitesurfing courses for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is body dragging in kitesurfing?

Being pulled through the water by the kite without a board. It teaches power control and how to get back to your board.

How long does body dragging take to learn?

Usually part of one or two lessons. Upwind body drag and board recovery take a little longer.

Do I need to body drag if I can wakeboard?

Yes. Board skills help later, but kite control in the water is a separate skill.

Which lesson covers body dragging?

The Discovery lesson (5,000 THB) introduces it, and the Full Beginner course builds on it.
