Your first own kite should make riding easier, not harder. That means stability, easy relaunch and power you can switch off — not the most radical model on the rack. Here is what to look for and which current kites fit.

What Makes a Kite Beginner-Friendly
- Easy relaunch — you will drop the kite; it must come back up from the water without a fight.
- Smooth, wide depower — pushing the bar away should really take the power out.
- Stable in gusts — a calm kite overhead instead of one that jumps around.
- Forgiving turns — predictable steering at a moderate speed.
- Good low-end — enough pull in lighter wind to keep the board moving.
Which Size First?
Most riders start with one kite matched to their weight and the local wind, then add a second size later. Use our kite size calculator: a 75 kg rider in 15 knots needs about 11 m. On Koh Samui, 70–80 kg riders mostly use 9–12 m kites in the December–April season.
Current Slingshot Kites for Newer Riders
As the official Slingshot distributor on Koh Samui, we see these work well for progression. Ghost V4 is built for beginners and freeride: lightweight, easy water starts and sheet-and-go. Code V3 (2027) suits riders moving into boosting who still want a forgiving kite. Big-air specialist kites such as the Code NXT V2 or Machine V3 are better as a second kite once you ride confidently. See prices in the kite shop.
Do not buy used gear without checking the bladders, canopy and bar lines — or bring it to us to check. A cheap kite with a slow leak or worn lines is not a bargain.
When to Buy
Buy after you ride independently, not before. Until then, lessons include all equipment and rental lets you try sizes. When you do buy, we can set up the kite for you and show you how to tune it.
